EVEN criminal gangs have to pay the mortgage.
Eight alleged members of a high-tech gang accused of stealing credit card details have been arrested over the past few months by officers attached to NSW’s Fraud and Cybercrime Squad.
The latest arrest came on Tuesday when a man handed himself in at Hurstville police station, in Sydney’s south.
The 42-year-old is accused of being one of a number of junior “mules” in the gang who were under instruction to withdraw cash and receive goods using stolen credit card data that was bought online.
As well as withdrawing cash, the gang used the credit card data to pay for flights, rent holiday properties and even make mortgage repayments, NSW Police said.
It’s alleged the 42-year-old used the stolen data to withdraw $140,000 from a private bank account.
A man who handed himself into Surry Hills police station on Monday allegedly used the data to try to buy a $50,000 Rolex watch.
Police say the 41-year-old also withdrew $20,000 from a private bank account and attempted to withdraw another $50,000.
Both men have been charged with identity theft and theft-related charges and are due to appear at Sydney’s Central Local Court on May 13.
