STATE Treasurer Andrew Fraser says Peter Beattie’s wife may have a bit to say about her husband running for Federal parliament, and denied any knowledge of the plan.
Labor insiders have confirmed to Gold Coast Bulletin columnist Peter Cameron that the former Queensland Premier has been approached to run for the seat of Brisbane at the next Federal election.
With incumbent Julia Gillard suffering diabolical polls and struggling to get her policies over the line in the hung parliament, the number crunchers have turned to the still-youthful Mr Beattie, who retired undefeated from politics in 2007.
Mr Fraser laughed the suggestion off this morning.
“You’d have to go and ask Peter about that,” he said.
“More to the point, my tip would be to ask (Mr Beattie’s wife) Heather, because after all there would be a state funeral if he went back in.
“I think she’d have the inside run on this: if she’s out the back carving up the pine box, then you’ll know it’s on. If not, then I’m sure Peter will clarify this situation at his earliest convenience.
“I know that he has decided to forgo the anonymity of it all and give a major address to all of you tomorrow … tomorrow will be an interesting day.”
LNP parliamentary leader Jeff Seeney slammed the idea.
“I think Peter Beattie was a disaster for Queensland when he was premier, I think he’d be a disaster for Australia too,” he told reporters in Brisbane today.
