Frankfurt airport strike eyes expansion

“This step is meant to show solidarity with the GdF members in the struggle against Fraport [the airport operator],” said the union in a statement on Tuesday.

The strike initially began on February 16, when apron controllers that direct aircraft in and out of their parking positions stopped performing their duties after a wage-centered dispute involving 200 personnel emerged.

GdF now wants 12 air traffic controllers to participate in the six-hour long strike planned for Wednesday. Some 300 flights are expected to be affected by the strike.

The union started a new five-day strike on Sunday after pay talks between its representatives and the management of Fraport collapsed.

According to Fraport, only 20 percent of its operations, which totals 1,400 flights, were affected during the strike last week. The airport operator considers the losses suffered so far as minimal but warns of greater damages should the strike grow larger.

“The threat to extend the strike would … lead to economic damage that can under no circumstances be justified,” Fraport said in a statement.

Workers at the airport are demanding pay hikes, increased bonuses and reduced working hours. They have also asked for outsourced employment to be relocated to a single company on a single contract.

Fraport, however, says it will not bow to “unreasonable” demands.

The airport is Europe’s third largest in terms of passenger count.
