Frank Walker farewelled at Sydney funeral

Former Labor politician Frank Walker has been remembered as a man who spent his life fighting injustice and serving the underdog.

Family, friends and politicians past and present paid tribute to Mr Walker at a state funeral in Sydney on Tuesday.

Mr Walker died at age 69 last week after succumbing to cancer.

Former Labor politician and close friend Michael Knight said Mr Walker was dedicated to taking up the causes of disadvantaged groups.

“Frank had huge ambitious – but for social reform, not personal advantage,” Mr Knight told a packed hall at the Conservatorium of Music.

“Frank wanted to change the world, not to conquer it.”

Mr Walker served as federal administrative services minister in the Keating government.

Before that he held various portfolios in the NSW Wran government.

Mr Walker was the youngest person appointed as NSW attorney-general when he took up the position at the age of 34.

Afterwards, he served as a judge in the District Court.

Mary Gaudron QC, Australia’s first female High Court justice and a university friend, said that despite his many achievements, Mr Walker had a difficult life, and two of his sons committed suicide.

“I think he had an awful life,” she said.

“He was pursued by vicious rumours in his political life and his personal life was dogged by tragedy and ill health.

“But I am very, very sure that a lot of people have had, and that many others will and have, a much better life than otherwise because of Frank Walker.”

NSW police minister Michael Gallacher said despite their political differences, the pair were friends.

“Even though I might hold a different policy position, I always admired Frank’s passion, his commitment and his ability to articulate a case.”

Former NSW Labor Premier Kristina Keneally and federal minister Anthony Albanese were among the nearly 200 people at the service.

The service will be followed by private burial.
