France election 2012: Nicolas Sarkozy accused of using Islamist terror swoops to boost campaign

Aware of the risk of sounding soft on extremism, Mr Hollande was more
cautious.

“I’m not questioning all that’s being done. I’m simply saying that we
should have maybe done more before,” he said.

The timing of the raids was fortuitous for Mr Sarkozy as they came as Mr
Hollande unveiled a detailed plan for his first year in office, if elected.
Images of the arrests however knocked his plans off the headlines.

Claude Guéant, the interior minister, responded that the judiciary, not the
Elysée, was driving these investigations.

However, Le Canard Enchaîné, the satirical weekly, cited a source close to the
investigation as saying: “The order to hit (the suspected Islamist
militants) came from on high, from the Elysée.”

Last Friday police arrested 19 other suspected extremists. Thirteen of them
were yesterday placed under formal investigation for “criminal
conspiracy connected to a terrorist enterprise” and illegal possession
and transportation of weapons.

Some are members of Forsane Alizza (Knights of Pride), a suspected extremist
group banned last month. Nine of the suspects, including group leader
Mohamed Achamlane, were remanded in custody as police investigate their
alleged crimes, which include a plan to kidnap a Jewish judge in Lyon,
southeastern France.
