France election 2012: British-based voters preferred Nicolas Sarkozy to François Hollande

“The French in the UK distinguished themselves by being more reasonable,
shunning the extremes and voting for republican candidates.” Mr Cadic,
a centre-right candidate to become an MP in the French legislative elections
in June, said voter turnout was more down to organisational problems than
apathy.

“If you live in Cornwall, you have to vote in Bristol, which is a
three-hour drive. People had to queue for up to two hours when they did get
to one of just 27 polling booths in the UK. So you have to be pretty
committed.” He said the consulate would try and improve matters for the
second round on May 6.

French voters in Britain made up the bulk of a new Northern Europe
constituency covering all Gallic citizens in Denmark (including Greenland),
Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden and
the UK.

The constituency counted 89,526 registered voters for last Sunday’s election,
by far the greatest number of whom live in the UK, which has the third
largest number of French residents of any country in the world.

Northern Europe constituency voters will elect their first MP in the French
legislative elections.

More than 400,000 French citizens living abroad voted in the first round
election out of a total number of almost 2.5 million.
