France’s state-owned utility EDF has shut down four nuclear reactors at two power plants in northern England, citing safety precautions.
Two reactors at each of the Heysham and Hartlepool nuclear plants have been shut down for at least eight weeks, EDF Energy, the British unit of French giant EDF, confirmed on Monday.
Experts located a defect at one of the four reactors, prompting a shut down since June.
Meanwhile, the decision to shut down the three other reactors was a “conservative decision”, EDF stated.
“Until the results of the further inspections are known it is not possible to advise exact return to service dates for these four reactors, however, an initial estimate is that these investigations will take around eight weeks,” EDF Energy said.
Meanwhile, Britain announced last year a £16-billion deal with EDF to build two reactors at Hinkley Point C, southwestern England.
According to reports, EDF’s partner China General Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG), possibly together with China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), is also expected to have stakes in the consortium.
The Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) said last year that the closure of older power stations and the slow progress in building new ones were likely to stretch the supply system in Britain “close to its limits, notably during the winter of 2014-15.”
