Four NATO troops injured in explosion

Government officials say a total of 19 Afghan civilians, law enforcement officers, and four US-led forces are among those wounded in a car bomb explosion at the gates of Jalalabad airport in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Nangarhar earlier on Monday.

Six are believed to have been civilians.

At least nine people were killed in the car bombing incident.

Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for the blast, saying it was done in retaliation to the burning the Holy Qur’an by US forces on February 21.

Seven US soldiers were also wounded in a grenade attack on their base in northern Kunduz Province on Sunday.

Afghans have been holding rallies for nearly one week against the desecration of the holy Qur’an by US troops in Afghanistan.

Following the Qur’an desecration US President Barack Obama sent a letter to his Afghan counterpart Hamed Karzai, apologizing for the actions of American forces in Afghanistan. Obama told Karzai that the incident was not intentional.

Afghans have rejected the apology and demanded an immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from their country. The incident has sparked angry protests against US and NATO forces in Afghanistan and other Muslim countries.

More than 30 people have been killed in the protests in Afghanistan.
