STRONG winds and Melbourne’s hottest day in months have fuelled a fire that burnt four houses on the city’s eastern fringe.
Firefighters found a house engulfed in flames when they arrived at Mahony Street in Upwey yesterday morning.
The blaze quickly spread to a neighbouring house, Country Fire Authority operations officer Darren Treloar said.
One house was destroyed, with a second seriously damaged, he said.
Flames damaged the gardens and outer shells of the two houses at the rear of the engulfed home.
Twelve trucks and 50 firefighters took an hour to control the blaze.
Mr Treloar said the windy conditions made the job tougher. ”The wind contributed to the quick spread of the fire through the house and into the surrounding vegetation,” he said.
”In those conditions the old timber house was gone in no time.”
An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said of the three people injured, one was treated for burns at the Angliss Hospital.
Fire authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
