Four people – believed to be the same family – have been killed in a head-on collision northeast of Melbourne.
A man, woman and two children are believed to have died instantly when their sedan collided with a four-wheel drive on the Melba Highway near Dixons Creek just before 9pm (AEDT) on Sunday.
Police believe the dead are from the same family, News Limited reports.
Paramedics arrived to find a horrific scene near the Hunts Lane intersection, Ambulance Victoria intensive care paramedic Peter Godwin said.
The impact of the collision had shunted back the engine of the 4WD almost to the windscreen and the car had extensive damage to the passenger side and rear.
The 45-year-old 4WD driver was taken to the Maroondah Hospital in Ringwood with minor injuries. He was in a stable condition.
Witnesses told News Limited a Ford sedan was travelling north to Yea when it seemed to go out of control and veer onto the wrong side of the road and into the path of the 4WD.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the Melba Highway was closed in both directions.
Police do not believe the four who died were locals.
Victoria’s road toll for the year stands at 228.
