The cities of Fort Collins, Colo., and Ottawa, Canada, will officially recognize June 30, 2012, as Social Media Day. Elaine Lindsay of Ottawa and Julia Senesac of Fort Collins led the push for Social Media Day in their respective cities.

Lindsay and Senesac met earlier this year through an online social media training program. Together they started a joint company, Market Me Local. Despite being hundreds of miles away they “share” an office almost everyday by staying in contact over Skype or hanging out in Google Hangouts.
The cities’ proclamations were signed within a week of one another — by Karen Weitkunat, the mayor of Fort Collins, on June 5 and by Jim Watson, the mayor of Ottawa, on June 13.

Lindsay said she would be happy if only a dozen people showed up to this year’s event; last year only about five people in Ottawa celebrated Social Media Day, she told Mashable. But this year already looks to be more well-attended. So far more than 90 tickets have sold on Eventbrite for the event in Ottawa and the number continues to grow. So far she’s had to switch the venue twice to accommodate for the growing number of attendees.
Although both proclamations declare June 30 as Social Media Day, Social Media Day Ottawa will hold its event the morning of Friday June 29 at Carleton University. The event will feature presentations on topics such as Twitter, Google+, Google+ Hangouts and Facebook Timeline.

The Fort Collins Social Media Day celebration will be held outdoors on June 30 at Old Town Square, Fort Collins. It will have live music and aims to connect local organizations and residents. “The point is to get people who aren’t connected more connected,” Senesac said.
Fort Collins and Ottawa join the cities of Dublin, Las Vegas, New York, Toronto, Reno, Nev., San Jose and San Carlos, Calif., and Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia — all of which have recognized Social Media Day since it launched in 2010.
Last week the state of Nevada joined Arizona when it announced that it would officially be recognizing the event as well.
This brings the count of places officially celebrating Social Media Day to 11 cities and two U.S. states. We are happy to add Fort Collins and Ottawa to the list of places that have proclaimed June 30 as a day to recognize social media and its ability to empower people everywhere. We look forward to adding more.
Social Media Day began three years ago as a way to recognize the digital revolution. Participation more than doubled last year with more than 1,400 Meetups and thousands of attendees. This year is on track to being even bigger and better.
