Former Twitter CTO Takes Key Role at Cornell’s NYC Tech Campus

Cornell University is building a revolutionary technology campus in New York City in collaboration with the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, and filling a key role at the school will be former Twitter Chief Technology Officer Greg Pass.

Pass will serve as CornellNYC Tech‘s “Founding Entrepreneurial Officer,” a role tasked with ensuring the academic program is tightly intertwined with New York City‘s many technology firms and that the curricula is highly focused on developing students’ entrepreneurial skills. Pass will also help direct student hackathons and coding workshops as well as serve as a public face for the university.

“We want to make sure the academic program and the industry partnerships result in a successful relationship,” Pass told Mashable. “I’ll be figuring out creative ways to get the technology industry collaborating with the academic program, including both students and faculty members.”

Those collaborations will go above and beyond simple internships and mentorships, according to Pass.

“I think there’s an opportunity to be more creative,” he said. “Internships are common now, but I think being in such proximity to the New York technology scene will allow us to do some deeper collaborations through project work and create interesting tie-ins to student and faculty resources.”

Classes at CornellNYC Tech will begin in the fall of this year, but the admissions process is still being hammered out. While the main campus is being built over the next five years on Roosevelt Island, Google’s SoHo office will play host to the tech university — a sign the school has already been forming relationships with key companies in the New York technology ecosystem.

Dan Huttenlocher, Dean of CornellNYC Tech, welcomed Pass to the school’s faculty and praised his vast industry experience.

“The tech campus is all about bringing together academic research and industry know-how, and no one has more relevant industry experience than Greg Pass,” said Huttenlocher in a statement. “Greg advised Cornell throughout the proposal process, and now, by making the Entrepreneurial Officer one of the campus’ first hires, CornellNYC Tech is ensuring that the tech industry is a part of what we do from the start.”

Pass’ mission? Make sure that students don’t leave the technology campus with only a mastery of their academic work, but also the skills to go out and do something with their newfound knowledge.

“My goal is to give students not just mastery over their domain, but actual entrepreneurial skills and experiences,” said Pass. “And those will come through collaboration with the industry.”

During Pass’ tenure as the first CTO of Twitter, he was responsible for a great deal of behind-the-scenes work and team building. He is, accordingly, most excited about the chance to give back to the profession he loves by helping to bring talented people to CornellNYC Tech.

“It’s incredibly motivating to have the chance to give back to my profession through the school,” said Pass. “I think more and more engineers want to give back in some way. This is a really rare chance to try and help out.”
