Former judge likely new ABC chairman

THE Federal Government is set to name former NSW chief justice Jim Spigelman as the next chairman of the ABC.

The appointment, to be announced as early as today, has been welcomed by the Opposition.

Cabinet approved Mr Spigelman’s appointment on Monday, Fairfax said.

Opposition communications minister Malcolm Turnbull said his long-time friend had the ability, because of his high respect, to represent the ABC across all sides of politics.

“He can put together a compelling case, he’s a good advocate,” he told ABC Radio.

Mr Turnbull laughed off suggestions Mr Spigelman would be advocating additional government funding for the national broadcaster.

The most important thing the ABC had to do was maintain public support and deliver quality journalism and programs, he said.

“As journalism models erode, their longevity cannot be assumed and that’s why the ABC as an institutional source of news-making is going to be more important than ever.”

Mr Spigelman will replace former stockbroker Maurice Newman.
