FORMER governor-general Sir Zelman Cowen has died at his Melbourne home, aged 92.
Sir Zelman served as Governor-General from 1977 to 1982 and was a highly decorated jurist.
He was born in St Kilda in 1919 and studied law at Oxford University.
Sir Zelman, who had four children with his wife Anna, had suffered from Parkinson’s disease in recent years.
Executive director of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Peter Wertheim, expressed his condolences to Sir Zelman’s family.
“It is with great sadness that I inform you that Sir Zelman Cowen was gathered unto his people this evening,” Mr Wertheim said in a statement.
“May his family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.”
