Still not sick of South Korean rapper Psy’s year-defining Gangnam Style song? Then feast your eyes on China’s newest web meme: Aircraft Carrier Style.

China’s web-savvy citizens learned a new move last weekend after watching a news report about fighter jets landing and taking off from the country’s first aircraft carrier.

They particularly picked up on the funny pose of two aircraft carrier personnel, seen at the 2:37 mark in the video below, who were directing planes on board.

A meme is born: Savvy web-users soon started uploading images of themselves posing in the same way

They combined the pose with dance moves from Korean rapper Psy’s song Gangnam Style, and the new meme quickly went viral in China

Soon, web users began uploading photos of themselves mimicking the pose, and then combining it with Psy’s dance moves from the ever-popular Gangnam Style video — and a meme was born.

In just a few days, millions of Chinese web users were following links to the meme and posting photos and video of themselves adopting the Aircraft Carrier Style look.

The ‘Top Gun’-style addition is just the latest in a long line of memes and parodies that have stemmed from Gangnam Style, now the world’s most-viewed video on YouTube with more than 850 million hits. The song went viral this summer.

I’m Chinese. We know aircraft carrier is the key component of the modern Navy. Other countries have their many aircraft carriers but we don’t. For a long time, the Chinese people have been dreaming of having one aircraft carrier of our own. These days the-aircraft-carrier-dream has came true. This Aircraft Carrier Style is totally different from “Gangnam Style”. This is a spontaneous celebration among Chinese people with happiness, not a modern entertainment event. You can see Some rabbit symbol, that’s because we Chinese people are peace-loving people. We haven’t had war for many years, the people think our international image is friendly and harmonious sheep.

An RAF Harrier pilot had the idea for the ski jump ramp to save fuel taking off out in the countryside of Cold War Germany during my time in the RAF. his concept later adapted for carriers by the RN. Whilst spring, compressed air or hydraulic catapults may well have been invented in the US. It was Commander C C Mitchell RNVR who first suggested taking steam from the ship¿s main boiler to power a catapult in 1954 and it proved to be considerably more reliable and powerful. Development is back with the US now looking to replace steam technology on their next generation carriers with electromagnetic catapults. The UK is no longer a leading, innovative engineering nation and I despair at how my country has changed into a shadow of it’s former self, just in my lifetime.
