The Tasmanian Government is spruiking the return of pickled onion production to the state’s north-west.
Sabrands is one of 31 businesses to receive a share of the $100 million dollar forest peace deal fund to diversify Tasmania’s economy in response to the forestry downturn.
The company is using its $500,000 grant to build a new pickled onion processing plant at Ulverstone, returning the popular Blue Banner brand to the state.
Company spokesman Dan Presser says the company will use traditional pickling methods.
“It was only a natural move to do, the brand came from Tasmania, the quality came from Tasmania, the purity came from Tasmania, everything came from Tasmania,” said Mr Presser.
“So why would we want to do it anywhere else?”
The plant will employ 23 people and produce at least 800,000 jars of pickled onions a year.
