It grew to epitomise decent, hard-working ‘Middle Britain’. But the new Ford Mondeo looks more suitable for the likes of James Bond.

The seventh generation of the iconic Ford Mondeo launched today promising to be greener, cleaner and more upwardly-mobile than ever before.

The family saloon – which coined the term ‘Mondeo Man’ –  will go on sale in the UK next year 20 years after the original version hit British showrooms.

The sharp new model is clearly aiming high – with a grille that resembles 007’s Aston Martin, slanting headlights that would not look out of place on a modern Jaguar, a body style that bears comparison with a BMW saloon, and an array of the latest hi-tech safety and convenience gadgets that are usually seen on luxury cars.

The wraps come off the new Mondeo car in ‘Mo’town’ today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit where the giant Ford motor company has its world headquarters.

The transition since 1993 through the seven faces of Mondeo shows how the car has grown in sophistication and style over the years – even James Bond has been a driver on the big screen – with 1.34million sold in the UK alone over two decades.

As well as 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre petrol engines, the new Mondeo will have a diesel variant plus a ‘green’ petrol-electric hybrid and a plug-in electric hybrid version which can be charged from the mains to cut both fuel costs and emissions which aims to deliver the equivalent of 100miles to the gallon.

The 1.6 litre EcoBoost petrol engine is built at Ford’s UK factory in Bridgend and  development work on the car was carried out at Ford’s engineering centre in in Dunton, Essex.

Prices are expected to start at around £18,000 when it goes on sale in the UK in the first quarter of 2013. That’s nearly £7,000 more than the original ‘93 model which started at £11,200.

Ford says the seventh generation Mondeo will also have a magnificent seven ‘must-have’ technologies for the modern mid-range family car which are usually the preserve of far more expensive luxury vehicles.

These are:

  • an automatic ‘active’ self-parking system which identifies a suitable parallel parking  space and steers the car expertly into the gap while the driver operates only the accelerator and  brake pedals.
  • a ‘lane keeping system which monitors the road ahead by camera and alerts the driver through vibration  and then pressure on the steering wheel if they start to drift over the white lines through drowsiness or inattention.
  • Blind-spot sensors giving an audible and visible warning  of vehicles unseen by the driver, such as  when backing out of a parking space with an obscured view.
  • Adaptive cruise control ‘looks’ down the road and automatically applies the brakes if it senses a jam or slow moving traffic up ahead, issuing a ‘collision warning’ and an early  pump of the brakes if a crash looks likely.
  • Auto stop-start technology cuts off the engine when the car is at a standstill, such as at traffic lights, to save fuel and emissions, firing up the engine again when you move off.
  • Voice-activated communication through a driver’s hands-free mobile phone allowing the driver to keep hands on the wheel while changing CD or MP3 tracks  on the stereo or CDs on the radio.
  • A choice of voice-activated,  touch-screen, or conventional knob or button  commands to the car to change comfort settings such as the temperature control on the air conditioning.

The new Mondeo is about 1ft 3 inches longer,  4 inches wider and 2 inches higher than that first car – and will be significantly more fuel efficient and less polluting.

The first Mondeo managed just 28 miles to the gallon (compared to the expected 38mpg of the new  petrol versions of the car) and  was immediately named ‘Car of the Year.’  Three times world  F1 racing champion Sir Jackie Stewart played a key part over two years fine-tuning the original prototypes.

The Mondeo takes its name from Latinate language variants of ‘world’ – and was originally designed as Ford’s world car. However in the USA the same car will be sold within the next six months as the ‘Fusion’.

Back in 1997 when Tony Blair and ‘new Labour’ were swept to power, their victory was put down to their successful targetting of Mondeo Man – the middle class, middle Britain everyman voter with the Ford saloon on his family’s driveway. Mondeo Man was himself an evolution of the earlier ‘Sierra-man’, named after the Ford saloon it replaced, which was often compared to a ‘jelly mould.’

So significant is the iconic ‘Mondeo Man’ that in September 2006 the Daily Mail revealed how James Bond actor Daniel Craig was to drive a  then yet to be launched fifth generation Mondeo on the big screen in his first 007 outing in the movie ‘Casino Royal’,  prompting wags to dub him ‘Bondeo Man.’

Motoring expert and author Eric Dymock notes in his recent  book ‘The Ford in Britain Centenary File’ noted: ‘Mondeo accumulated many awards, none more significant than the appellation ‘Mondeo Man’ signifying the earnest, mobile,  middle class toiler.’

Great looking car

In the US, it’s the 2013 Ford Fusion

At £18,000 this could make up for my receding hair line…

sadly, this will be just another Ford… yes, they look great… and they disintegrate before your very eyes.
whereas my Volvo V70, with 254 thousand miles on it, (totally original) still looks like it just rolled off the production line… and everything works… its also returns 45MPG (diesel, 2.5lt )
its a pity, that with all their technology, and experience, the engineers at Ford, still cannot manufacture a car, without inbuild obsolesence… but, they make more money from the sale of “Main dealer ONLY” servicing parts and components, than they do on the sale of the car…
example. daughters Ford Fiesta 1.3, 16v Zetec… at the local ford dealer, just shy of 800 quid… luckily we own a garage, and have the kit, and experience… cost for the same, non ford part. 83 quid… its NOT a typo, eighty three quid… plus VAT of course… and it only took a pair of grunts, in a back street garage, 3 hours to do the job.

So where is my critique on the Mondeo. Unmodded again? The DM makes Pravda seem like the free press.

My 54 plate Zetec S diesel has 180k on the clock, and is STILL on the original clutch. The back box on the original exhaust failed just last week ! Apart from tire’s etc, it’s has only cost me a 28 quid hose. I’ll definitely be looking to acquire the new one.
