nsnbc : Former Spanish Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez arrived in the Venezuelan capital Caracas as aide to the legal defense of jailed opposition leaders Antonio Ledezma, Daniel Caballos, and Leopoldo Lopez. The three were arrested on charges of abetting violent actions and an attempted coup d´état.
The former Spanish PM has no license to practice law in Venezuela, but he will act as adviser to the defense. Gonzalez, who arrived in Caracas on Sunday, also noted that he would be meeting politicians as well as family members.
Antonio Ledezma, the former Mayor of the Metropolitan District of Caracas stands accused of being among the ringleaders of paramilitary groups which were arrested by Venezuelan authorities during violent protests last year. The violence cost 43 lives. Ledezma is, like Leopoldo Lopez, a member of the right-wing Popular Will party.
Anotonia Ledezma, Daniel Caballos, and Leopoldo Lopez also stand accused for their alleged involvement in the planning of a coup d´état earlier this year.
Gonzalez was scheduled to arrive in Venezuela in May but his visit was rescheduled due to a delay in the trial against Leopoldo Lopez. After touching down in Caracas, the former Spanish PM visited Antonio Ledezma who is under house arrest. Ledezma was initially imprisoned but was released to house arrest on medical reasons. The trial against Ledezma is scheduled to begin next week.
The visit of the former Spanish PM and his participation in the defense of the accused drew sharp criticism from the side of Venezuela’s governing PSUV party who denounced his involvement as “unacceptable”. The practice to invite legal advisers, including legal advisers, or to grant those who have no license to practice law within a given jurisdiction status as friend of the court is not unusual.
Political positioning and scapegoating are part of the politically charged criminal trials. While Gonzalez and several western governments describe the trial as crackdown against democracy and against Venezuela’s opposition, the PSUV government denounces “foreign interference”.
President Nicolas Maduro notes in a Tweet that “Venezuelan affairs are ours, only Venezuelans have legal authority to deal with them, our entire homeland rejects interventionism”. Gonzalez, for his part, stressed that he believes that “Venezuela needs dialog”. Gonzalez rejected claims that his involvement in the legal proceedings as adviser represents “the interference of a defeated colonial empire” as rhetoric and propaganda.
Gonzalez’ involvement was also met by criticism from Spain’s United Left Coalition. Om Monday, United Left leader Cayo Lara followed the Venezuelan PSUV government’s rhetoric by describing Gonzalez’ involvement in the proceedings as a throwback to Spain’s colonialist past in Latin America.
All of the accused have alleged ties to foreign, particularly U.S. American NGOs who are notorious as front organizations for the U.S. State Department and the CIA, inducing the National Endowment for Democracy,( NED).
