FNA- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif underlined that Tehran’s future decision on how to deal with the US antagonistic moves under the 2015 nuclear deal depends on how the EU would treat the US violation of the internationally-endorsed agreement.
“We have numerous options and withdrawing from the nuclear deal is just one of them. There are other options as well and the Europeans contribute a role in them,” Zarif said on Sunday.
“The nuclear deal benefits the Europeans and therefore, they don’t want an atmosphere in which the US decides for them,” he added.
“Therefore, our choices to some extent depend on Europe’s behavior and resistance against the US disloyalties and violations,” Zarif underscored, adding that the EU has shown some signs of such opposition to the recent US Congressional approval of new sanctions against Iran.
His remarks came after approval of a US Congress bill which passed both houses with veto-proof majorities and includes new sanctions against Iran, Russia and North Korea.
Lawmakers in the House of Representatives passed their version of the bill 419-3 on Tuesday, while the Senate voted 98-2 on Thursday to send the legislation to Trump’s desk.
The White House announced on Friday night that President Trump intends to sign legislation imposing new sanctions on Russia, Iran and North Korea.
In response, Rapporteur of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Seyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini announced on Saturday that the Commission has unanimously approved the generalities of a single-urgency bill to confront the US sanctions in an extraordinary meeting.
Also, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi announced that the country will certainly reciprocate the US congress approval to impose new sanctions against Tehran in violation of the 2015 nuclear deal.
“The recent measure by the US congress is a hostile move and the Islamic Republic of Iran will certainly adopt a decisive measure against it,” Araqchi said after holding a meeting with members of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission in Tehran on Saturday.
Noting that the US legislation violated articles 26, 28 and 29 of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and the world powers), he said, “Therefore, there is a need for Iran’s reciprocal action.”
