“Most of the deaths occurred in the early hours of Friday after heavy downpours in Rudraprayag and Bageshwar districts of the scenic Himalayan state of Uttarakhand,” AFP quoted the local Disaster Management Minister Yashpal Arya as saying on Saturday.
Arya added that rescuers pulled 17 bodies from the debris today in the affected areas of Rudraprayag.
He also said that army personnel have been helping local rescuers to find more bodies in the affected areas. Reports say the landslides have also stranded 100 pilgrims, making a trek to Hindu shrines.
“We fear that up to 18 more bodies could be still buried in the debris in Rudraprayag,” Arya noted.
Heavy rainfall can be deadly in the Himalayan hills, which are more prone to landslides and flash floods during the monsoon season, which extends from June to September.
The four-month-long season accounts for 75 percent of the country’s annual rainfall, half of which occurs in June and July.
In August, at least 34 people were killed in the same area when the torrential rains caused flash floods and landslides.
At least 23 construction workers were among those killed by the floods that hit the Himalayan foothills in the Uttarakhand state.
The floods damaged roads and highways and at least two bridges were swept away. Scores of homes were also washed away by the incessant rainfall in the state and people were forced to move into buildings on safer ground.
