Triggered by an avalanche, the snow-fed Seti Gandaki River in western Nepal burst its banks and smashed into two buildings and a number of shacks in Kharapani village on Saturday, according to police officials.
“A settlement has been washed away by a river in the mountains and rescue efforts are underway,” the police superintendent of the Kaski district, Sailesh Thapa said.
Thapa said dozens of people have gone missing including three Russian tourists. The death toll is also expected to rise.
People are terrorized as the flood is moving towards Pokhara, Nepal’s second largest city which is located about 200 km from capital Kathmandu.
The flooding has caused extensive damage to homes and swept way two buildings. The government has ordered prompt rescue operations.
