Floods family wins $5m in lottery

A Queensland family devastated by last year’s floods is enjoying a dramatic change of fortune after winning $5 million in the state lottery yesterday.

The family, from Ipswich in south-eastern Queensland, bought the winning Oz 7 Lotto ticket at a local newsagency which this time last year was completely submerged in flood waters, the Courier Mail reports.

A Golden Casket spokeswoman said the winner did not know he had won the multi-million dollar windfall until Lotto phoned him to tell them the good news.

“It’s too early to say how we’ll use the prize money, but I can assure you it will make a big difference in our lives,” the unnamed winner said in a written statement to news media.

“Last year was a very challenging year so it’s nice to start 2012 with such great news.”

The winner also praised the newsagency where he had bought the ticket for recovering so well after last year’s floods and reopening in August.
