Lifesavers are pleading with the public to only swim at patrolled beaches after a man died on the NSW south coast early this morning.
An ambulance helicopter and local lifesavers were called to Bawley Point, between Ulladulla and Batemans’s Bay, after a man believed to be in his 60s was found floating face down in the surf about 7.30am.
He was pulled unconscious from the water, but authorities were unable to revive him.
Surf life saving far south coast duty officer, Andrew Edmunds, said it was lucky that there have not been more fatalities over the past week.
“We’ve been kept really busy,” said Mr Edmunds. “We want people to please swim at patrolled beaches.”
He said there has been a large swell over the past few days, which has contributed to the number of incidents.
The death comes after eight people were rescued from a rip, also on the south coast, yesterday.
The first rescue involved two men and a 15-year-old boy from Canberra who were holidaying at the North Head camping ground at Moruya Heads.

The teenager was winched out by helicopter and a 19-year-old man was helped by surfers before being brought to shore by volunteer lifesavers.
The other man, also aged 19, made it to shore on his own and was treated at the scene.
A short time later, lifesavers at Broulee pulled another five people from a rip.
Mr Edmunds said Moruya Heads was proving to be a dangerous black spot.
“We’ve been called there just about every day this week, and been involved in a number of serious rescues,” he said.
On Tuesday lifesavers rescued a family of three who were kayaking in the area and were sucked out to sea.
