The NSW State Emergency Service has received more than 130 calls for help after very heavy rainfall caused flash flooding south and south-west of Sydney.

Emergency crews have been called to rescue cars stuck in floodwaters in Banksia, Rockdale, Padstow Heights, Sylvania, Five Dock and Rosebery.

Phil Campbell from the SES says people should avoid driving on flooded roads.

Meanwhile, the Road Transport Authority says traffic lights throughout the Sydney metropolitan are blacked out or flashing yellow as a result of the storm.

It said several roads in the Sydney metropolitan area have also been closed due to flooding.

Sydney Airport expected some delays after the threat of lightning forced it to bring ground-handling staff indoors.

On Sunday night the weather bureau said the storms were headed towards Sydney’s northern beaches and Hornsby area.
