Flares lit at South Pars phases 15, 16

Speaking at a ceremony in the Iranian capital Tehran on Tuesday, Ghasemi said that natural gas flares at the two aforementioned phases of South Pars gas field – the biggest gas reservoir in the world – were lit on Sunday.

Managing director of Iran’s Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) Mousa Souri said on April 15 that phases 15 and 16 of South Pars gas field will start early production by the sixth Iranian calendar month of Shahrivar, which begins on August 22.

He also added that the development of the two phases has progressed by 85 percent.

Iran sits on the world’s second largest natural gas reserves after Russia, and is trying to up its gas production by increasing foreign and domestic investments, especially in its South Pars gas field.

The field is shared by Iran and Qatar. The Iranian share, which is divided into 28 phases, has about 14 trillion cubic meters of gas, or about eight percent of the world’s total reserves, and more than 17 billion barrels of liquefied natural gas resources, according to the South Pars Gas Complex.

Souri said on April 4 that some 86 billion cubic meters of natural gas was produced in the South Pars gas field over the past Iranian calendar year (ended March 19, 2012).

Shana news agency, the official news outlet of Iran’s oil ministry, quoted the POGC managing director as saying that the output was worth some $40 billion.
