Five million in South Sudan facing severe food shortages

Both sides were due on Wednesday to confirm that they would resume African
Union-sponsored peace talks over shared grievances, under a deadline with
threats of sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council last week.

But Sudan has failed to signal that it will restart discussions, said Pagan
Amum, South Sudan’s lead negotiator in the African Union-sponsored
discussions.

“I believe it is because the government of Sudan hasn’t been keen to
return to talks, which is in violation of the UNSC resolution and the AU
roadmap” underlying the UN resolution, he said.

The unanimous resolution threatened sanctions if its demands are not complied
with.

It sought to avert a “serious threat to international peace and security”
caused by the situation along the disputed border between the two countries,
after weeks of fighting.
