Five die in tragic road crashes

FIVE south-west Queensland people were killed and at least five others were seriously injured after a horror weekend on our roads.

The death of four Tara residents in a crash which tore their vehicle in half on Saturday has left the rural community reeling.

Police said the vehicle they were travelling in left the road and collided with a tree on Bennetts School Rd near the intersection of Alkira Lane, north-west of Tara, about 8pm.

A 26-year-old man, 39-year-old man, 43-year-old woman and 44-year-old woman died at the scene.

A 48-year-old man was taken to Tara Hospital with multiple fractures and lacerations before being airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a critical condition for emergency surgery.

He was in a serious but stable condition yesterday.

The tragedy came after a 38-year-old Talwood man was killed in the early hours of Saturday morning when the ute he was driving collided with a tree and rolled.

The crash occurred about 250 metres south of the Queensland/New South Wales border on the Moree-Boonangar Crossing Rd.

Moree police shift supervisor Sergeant Gary O’Dwyer said the man was ejected from the ute in the crash.

Sgt O’Dwyer said the man’s seriously injured 35-year-old male passenger was able to free himself from the wreckage before calling 000 about 1am.

He was taken to Goondiwindi Hospital with serious head injuries before being flown to Toowoomba Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, three men were seriously injured when the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a tree at the intersection of Baynes and West sts about 11.30pm on Saturday.

Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to free one of the men before they were taken to Toowoomba Hospital.

Toowoomba police shift supervisor Sergeant Regan Draheim said the driver was affected by liquor.

It is believed the men were not wearing seatbelts.
