Five dead in massive Indonesia quakes

They said on Thursday that they believed at least two people died of heart attacks and three others died of shock.

“Based on data collected on victims and damage, five people died, one person is critically injured and six others had minor injuries,” National Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

He added the critically injured victim was a child, who fell from a tree during the quake.

Wednesday’s first quake, whose magnitude was measured at 8.6 on the Richter scale by the United States Geological Survey, was centered about 200 miles offshore and was felt across a large area. Tremors were felt in Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand as well as Indonesia.

The initial tremor struck at a depth of 14 miles with an epicenter 269 miles southwest of Banda Aceh, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The second quake, measured at 8.2, was somewhat farther offshore.

Thousands of panic-stricken people packed the streets of Banda Aceh, at the northern end of Sumatra, as they streamed out of the city in cars and motorcycles seeking higher ground.

Immediately after the temblor struck, a high tsunami alert was issued along the Indian Ocean rim and fears of a wall of waves coming down on the coastal areas looked real.

People fled buildings. Terrified residents screamed “God is great” as they jumped into cars and motorcycles, clogging streets as they fled.

Patients were wheeled out of hospitals, some still lying in their beds with drips attached to their arms.

Wednesday’s massive earthquakes revived memories of a giant 9.1-magnitude quake and tsunami on December 26, 2004, which killed 230,000 people in about a dozen nations, according to National Public Radio.

Indonesia is vulnerable to earthquakes as it sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called “the Pacific Ring of Fire.”

The region is known for its seismic and volcanic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
