Fitbit launches its own scale to track and tweet your weight, body fat

At this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Fitbit announced its latest device, the Aria WiFi Smart Scale, to track weight, body fat, and body mass index over time — all while integrating with FitBit’s website, Twitter, and Facebook.

Step on the Fitbit Aria Smart Scale and your weight and other stats will be automatically uploaded to Fitbit.com for number crunching and monitoring — or sign up to earn what Fitbit calls “badges” to help motivate you in your diet and fitness goals.

The Aria scale supports up to eight people in one household, can differentiate who is being weighed at any given time, and can keep your weight information private from others if you choose. The new scale is priced at $129.95, available for pre-sale, and set to ship in late April.

The company recently launched its second-generation fitness tracking device, the Fitbit Ultra ($99.95), with new wireless features and lifestyle tracking metrics, as well as its first iPhone app. Like its original device, the Ultra features an internal motion detector to track a user’s movements, sleep habits, and calorie burn during both the day and night — in addition to tracking vertical steps with a built-in altimeter. The new app includes food-tracking and activity-planning features.

iHealth also plans to debut a Bluetooth-enabled iHealth Digital Scale that can upload weight data to an iPhone or iPad. A free app can aggregate the info for data-crunching, or upload details to doctors or social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

Withings too has its own model, the WiFi Body Scale, but takes it one step further by partnering with other companies’ wellness devices, including RunKeeper’s Health Graph and Fitbit and Zeo, to integrate data via the Withings health and wellness cloud platform — just launched at this week’s CES.
