nsnbc : Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Taiwanese counterpart Ma Ying-jeou shook hands at a historic meeting on Saturday; the first cross Taiwan Strait meeting since 1949.
Presidents Xi Jinping and Ma Ying-jeou shook hands at about 3 p.m. local time at the Shangri-La hotel in Shanghai.
The historic handshake was documented by hundreds of journalists. Before leaving the photo-op for talks behind closed doors, both Xi and Ma made brief statements to the press.
Xi said among other “Today will be remembered in history, no force can pull us apart because we are brothers who are still connected by our flesh even if our bones are broken, and we are one family”.
Both Xi and ma avoided using the word “president” while addressing each other, addressing each others with Mister instead. Xi continued:
“We are sitting together today to prevent the historical tragedy from repeating itself, prevent the fruits from peaceful development of cross-Strait ties from being lost again, enable compatriots across the Strait to continue to create a peaceful life, and enable our next generations to share a bright future”
Ma, for his part, said the two sides should consolidate the consensus of the One-China principle and make contributions to the revival of the Chinese nation, adding that “we should consolidate the 1992 Consensus, and maintain the peaceful status quo.”
Ma also noted that the two sides should cooperate and be committed to the revival of the Chinese nation, as the peoples of the both sides across the Strait are all Chinese descendants.
Xi made a four point proposal on cross-strait relations during the meeting behind closed doors, reports the Chinese State news agency Xinhua, quoting Zhang Zhijun, the mainland’s Taiwan affairs chief.
Xi reportedly agreed to adhering to the common political consensus reached in 1992, as also proposed by Ma. That is, that both sides embrace the One-China principle and to solve cross-strait affairs with prudence, wisdom and mutual respect. Zang quoted Xi as saying:
“The peaceful development of cross-Strait relations over the past seven years lies in adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing Taiwan independence.”
Ma stated that the two sides should cooperate and be committed to the revival of the Chinese nation, as the peoples of the both sides across the Strait are all Chinese descendants.
