Firemen to avoid calls in England & Wales

On Sunday, the London Fire Brigade said only the most devastating emergency fire calls may be answered during the open-ended strike starting on Wednesday and firemen can choose to act over calls for gas leaks, flooding, people trapped in lifts, grass and rubbish fires, and animal rescues.

The Fire Brigade Union has scheduled the first round of the strikes for four hours from noon on Wednesday.

The move comes over disputes with the government over its pension plans and the potential sacking of thousands of firemen.

During the industrial action, the government will not be deploying the so-called “green goddesses” that is when the army attends emergency fire calls in green trucks, because most of the trucks have been sold to African countries’ brigades.

The last time the green goddesses were used was in 2003-2004, while thousands of firefighters held an eight-day strike over a low pay dispute.
