Victorian firefighters are working furiously to contain a large grassfire before worsening weather conditions push the blaze into Ararat.
Four water-bombing aircraft have joined the effort, as 300 firefighters battle the blaze, which has burned 800 hectares of land in the state’s west.
The fire is burning about 3km northeast of Ararat and is expected to reach the area of Warra Yadin shortly.
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) says about six properties are under immediate threat and police are doorknocking homes in the area.
CFA incident controller John Athorn says fire crews made good progress overnight but the wind has since picked up and the situation remains volatile.
The temperature is expected to hit the low-to-mid 30C in Ararat on Sunday, with wind gusts of about 20km/h.
Mr Athorn said crews were working along the western flank of the fire, to stop it spreading to nearby state forest, and also at the head of the fire, to hold it north of the Pyrenees Highway.
If that fails, Ararat could be under threat.
“If the fire does happen to cross the Pyrenees Highway there are significant numbers of properties to the south and southwest of this fire (at risk) because it will push into the northeastern side of the Ararat township,” Mr Athorn told AAP.
“The wind’s going to increase over the next couple of hours and we’re working extremely hard to secure that southern edge of the fire … the aircraft will help us to ensure that occurs.”
The fire is described as slow moving and is travelling in a southwesterly direction towards Ararat.
The Pyrenees Highway has been closed and residents have been warned to activate their bushfire survival plans.
There are 75 fire trucks on site, two graders and four bulldozers.
