Crowds were gathering outside a surf club in Sydney’s east as firefighters from 15 nearby stations battle a blaze on the building’s top floor.
Shortly before 7.45pm (AEST) on Friday, revellers were evacuated from the Maroubra Seals Sports Club after smoke began filtering down through air conditioning vents.
Some 70 firefighters were at the scene and managed to contain a severe fire in the building’s plant room, just above the fifth floor gym.
Superintendent Ian Krimmer from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said two people had been treated for minor injuries.
“We have the fire contained to the top floor,” he said.
“There has been a roof collapse.”
A number of people had been evacuated, Inspector Chris Sedgwick from FRNSW said.
“It’s a Friday night, so it’s pretty busy,” he said.
The beachside club had already attracted an audience.
“There’s a good crowd watching now. It is pretty spectacular,” he said.
He said the building would probably escape structural damage.
“There is going to be a big clean-up job,” he said, but “we’ll save it.”
