More than 300 people had to rush from a sports club in Sydney’s south-east on Friday night after the building caught fire, causing part of the roof to collapse.
The fire ripped through the top floor of the Maroubra Seals Sports Club, forcing staff and patrons out onto the street.
Superintendent Ian Klimmer says a block of units behind the club was evacuated, as well as the 350 people from the six storey club.
“Being a Friday night, it was obviously full with a lot of people trying to have a night out,” he said.
He says it appears the fire broke out in the gym on the top floor. Investigators will examine the building later this morning.
At Canterbury in Sydney’s south west, 70 fire fighters contained a blaze that destroyed a furniture factory.
