A carpet manufacturing plant southwest of Sydney has been totally destroyed by fire.
Emergency services say 50 workers had to be evacuated from the building in Henry Street, in Picton, as the blaze took hold.
Firefighters arrived just after 7pm (AEST) on Friday to find the single-level factory well alight, an emergency service spokesman told AAP.
He said the fire, which started with a mechanical malfunction, was not being treated as suspicious.
“The carpets go through a couple of heaters where some glue gets put on the back of the carpet,” he said.
“The carpet got caught in the machinery and the heaters made the carpet catch alight.”
No injuries were reported among the 50 workers and no damage was done to surrounding properties, but the ABC is reporting that 180 jobs will be lost.
It took 35 firefighters about two hours to extinguish the fire, the emergency services spokesman said.
