Fines for SA bus chaos

Three companies that run many of Adelaide’s public bus services will be slugged more than $210,000 in penalties for poor performance.

Transport Services Minister Chloe Fox said the three companies had failed to meet the standards set down in their contracts.

“I do not expect the bus companies to be happy with these penalties,” Ms Fox told state parliament on Wednesday.

“Nor do I expect the penalties to ease the legitimate frustrations of commuters.”

The penalties come after several months of chaos on many of Adelaide’s bus routes, with buses running late or failing to turn up.

Despite the fines the Greens want the government to return bus services to government hands, arguing the privatisation has been a failure.

“While the government is fining companies for failing to meet timetables, passengers are still being left stranded,” Greens MP Mark Parnell said.

“People who rely on buses to get around are being sacrificed in order to cut costs.

“The government needs to begin now the process of returning important public services like the management of our bus services back into public hands.”
