Finally, Samsung rolls out Ice Cream Sandwich for the Galaxy S II

After a long wait, a leaked video, several false starts and considerable upset from frustrated owners, Samsung has finally started its roll out of Android 4.0 to the Galaxy S II smartphone.

Announced via its Samsung Tomorrow blog, Samsung says the update will initially be available in Europe, with Poland, Hungary and Sweden mentioned specifically, as well as in Korea. This initial phase will make way for a wider roll out soon after.

A post has also appeared on Samsung Mobile’s Facebook page, and at the time of writing some 800 people have responded with a comment, although only a few seemed to say they had received the update. According to owners in Norway, Ice Cream Sandwich has arrived there too.

According to Pocket-lint.com, Samsung has told them UK owners will see their updates begin on 19 March, however this date will be subject to network approval.

If you own a Galaxy Note, Galaxy S II LTE or either the Tab 10.1 or Tab 8.9 tablets, then Samsung has promised your ICS update “will follow soon.” As it’s now clear Android 4.0 is operational on the S II, these devices shouldn’t be too far behind.

If you’re wondering how you’ll know when it’s ready for your phone, it’ll be arriving via Samsung’s Kies software updater, so watch out for a notification. The one catch is that this is for the international GT-i9100 version of the S II, so owners of one of the phone’s many variants will have to wait a while longer for news.

While Ice Cream Sandwich has been around for a while, Samsung’s upgrade for the S II is notable for being one of the first major updates rolled out by a prominent manufacturer. HTC isn’t far behind though, as ICS has started to arrive on the Sensation in selected countries too.

So, now it’s time to start watching Kies instead of Twitter for news of your Ice Cream Sandwich update, which means it’s at least one step closer to reality than this time last week.
