According to Fiji officials, at least two people have so far been confirmed dead and more than 6,000 have taken shelter in evacuation centers set up by the government.
The International Airport in the western region of Nadi has been closed after roads to the airport were cut off.
Air Pacific has also announced that all inbound flights to Nadi Airport scheduled for Sunday have been canceled.
Fiji Officials have warned tourists not to travel to the Islands for the time being, as the visitors’ safety could not be guaranteed.
“This action is being reluctantly taken by the Fijian government to ensure the safety and convenience of international visitors and Fijian citizens seeking to return to Fiji,” Fiji Tourism Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said.
The latest heavy rains and flood caused rivers to burst their banks, taking water levels higher than those experienced during a six-day deluge in January which claimed 11 lives.
