Fifth of British new graduates jobless

The Graduates in the Labour Market 2012 report published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the unemployment rate for new graduates stood at 18.9% in the last three months of 2011.

According to the ONS figures, 35.9% of recent graduates were employed in non-graduate jobs, which were suitable for a school leaver, compared to 26.7% in 2001.

“Higher-skill jobs generally require competence through post-compulsory education whereas lower-skill jobs tend to require competence only through compulsory education,” said the report.

President of the National Union of Students Liam Burns said, “The expansion of higher education and long-term investment in our future is infinitely preferable to a growing dole queue and a higher benefits bill.”

Blaming the situation on a lack of high-quality jobs over the last decade, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber added, “Raising the skills of UK workers must be accompanied with an industrial strategy focused on boosting high-value industries such as manufacturing. Otherwise public investment in education and the talents of UK graduates will be wasted.”

Last month, data released by the ONS revealed that the UK’s unemployment has jumped by 48,000 to 2.67m in the three months to December, indicating the highest jobless rate of 8.4% for 16 years.
