Few drink-driving but many speeding in NSW

NSW police have criticised drivers who think they’re above the law after the annual Easter road blitz began with more than 3000 traffic infringements.

On the first day of Operation Tortoise, 18 people were charged with drink-driving while there were more than 1000 speeding offences.

A further 1935 other traffic infringement notices were issued.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, has called for motorists to slow down and remember good driver behaviour.

“Exceeding the speed limit contributes to 40 per cent of fatal crashes which occur on our roads and costs the community $1.7 billion each year,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said in a statement.

“While a majority of motorists are obeying the speed limit and road rules, we still have a few drivers who seem to think they are above the law.”

In one of the most dangerous examples, a learner-driver was clocked speeding at more than twice the legal limit while talking on his mobile phone, before almost knocking over a police officer in Sydney’s south.

The 18-year-old learner was detected travelling at 105km/h in a 50km/h zone in Kingsgrove on Thursday afternoon.

“This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and police will not tolerate such disregard for safety,” Asst Comm Hartley said.

“That includes the safety of other motorists, pedestrians (and) cyclists as well as personal safety,” he said.

Meanwhile, motorists trying to get away over Easter have been warned of slow-moving holiday traffic on Friday afternoon.

There is currently heavy northbound traffic on the Pacific Highway from Gordon to Wahroonga, the Transport Management Centre said, while queues at Bulahdelah are adding one and a half hours to travel time.

There is also heavy traffic westbound on the Great Western Highway from Valley Heights to Leura, westbound on Bells Line of Road from Richmond to Lithgow, and southbound on the Hume Highway through Wilton.
