THE contributions of Australia’s six million volunteers will be recognised across the country next week.
National Volunteer Week, which celebrates all those who volunteer their time, energy and skills to help others, begins on Monday.
The federal government is encouraging all Australians to share their volunteer stories as part of the celebrations.
“Volunteers contribute over 730 million hours of unpaid work to their communities each year, doing everything from providing companionship to the elderly to being the first responders during a natural disaster,” Social Inclusion Minister Mark Butler said in a statement.
“This is a massive contribution to our economic, social and cultural life, and National Volunteer Week provides an opportunity to collectively thank volunteers for their efforts.”
Mr Butler will officially launch National Volunteer Week at the Australian War Memorial on Monday.
