“Frankly, the far greater threat to Khadija and her children is that they are going to die as a result of the insanitary conditions in that prison than that they get the death penalty.” Although Pakistan still imposes the death penalty in some drugs cases, executions have not been carried out since 2008.
Miss Shah has told police that she spent six weeks on holiday in Pakistan with her children, visiting relatives, and was asked to carry back some extra bags.
She was arrested at Islamabad Airport as she tried to check in for a flight home to Birmingham and said she had no idea the luggage contained 123 packages of heroin.
A spokesman for the British High Commission said diplomats were aware of the case.
“We are providing consular assistance to Miss Shah,” he said.
Miss Shah has not yet been charged and is due to appear in court again on June 25.
