UPDATE: HUNDREDS of homes are at risk as the Murrumbidgee River threatens to breach levees in Hay, NSW.
Residents have been told to evacuate as major flooding is feared after a faster than expected rise of the river brought today’s original noon deadline forward.
The river is now expected to reach 8.9 metres tonight and forecast to peak near nine metres on Monday, well above the design height of the town’s levees.
The State Emergency Services says this could result in the town of Hay and South Hay being inundated, with the NSW Bureau of Meteorology warning some 370 properties could be in affected in the town of Hay and another 100 in south Hay, with another 80 being potentially at risk.
Officials said at 5pm (AEDT) the levee, which was recently strengthened, was holding, but its structural integrity could not be guaranteed yet.
