Then two months later early Friday morning, July 20, 2012, a 24-year-old former graduate student at the University of Colorado-Denver named James Eagan Holmes was seen by moviegoers in Theater 9 at the Century 16 Movie Theater in Aurora, Colorado, a suburb of Denver. Eyewitnesses describe him as wearing a gas mask, ballistic helmet, bulletproof jacket and armed with tear gas, rapid fire guns and lots of ammunition. According to eyewitnesses, he allegedly opened fire on people throughout Theater 9. It was around 12:30 AM Mountain during the premier of the Hollywood blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises. Twelve people were shot dead. Fifty-eight were wounded, many hospitalized and eleven are in critical condition. Holmes was arrested in the theater’s rear parking lot seven minutes after the first 911 phone calls for help and he told police his apartment was rigged with explosives.

Suspect James Holmes is being held in the Colorado Arapahoe County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday morning, July 23. The court file was sealed, according to a court order.
The University of Colorado said Holmes had been withdrawing from the university’s graduate program in neurosciences, after enrolling at the university in June 2011. Holmes had graduated from the University of California-Riverside in 2010 with a degree in neuroscience.
Aurora Police Chief Oates Describes
Evidence of “Calculated” Planning Past Four Months
On Saturday, July 21, 2012, Aurora Police Chief Daniel Oates said in a press conference after police and FBI technicians detonated two devices inside the booby-trapped apartment and reported “all hazards” had been removed from the Holmes apartment. Chief Oates described information that Holmes had received many deliveries over the past four months to both his home and work addresses, which police believe explains how Holmes got some of the materials for the theater attack and wiring his apartment with explosives. “What we’re seeing here is evidence of, I think, some calculation and deliberation. We have the evidence of a deliberative process to commit this assault, and we have the evidence of a deliberative process in his mind to attack whoever opened the door of his apartment. Make no mistake, this apartment was designed to kill.”
Will this irrational horror turn out to be the act of a single deranged individual? Or is there a possibility that the shooter was recruited for calculated terrorism by unknown sources that wanted to “attack theaters and similar mass gatherings” in the United States this summer as warned about in the May 17, 2012, Roll Call Release by Homeland Security and the FBI?
