A father wrestled with a gunman moments after his son was shot in an execution-style murder south of Sydney, police say.
Darko Janceski, 32, was shot several times in Gannet Avenue, Berkeley, about 5.10pm yesterday when a gunman arrived at his father’s house on a motorbike.
Detective Superintendent Wayne Starling said it was a targeted attack.
“Darko walked out to the front [of the house] and the motorcyclist discharged several shots at his direction,” Detective Superintendant Starling said.
“Darko falls on to the ground and Darko’s father come to his aid and wrestles with the motorcyclist.
“However, the motorcyclist overpowered the father and escaped on the motorcycle.”
Janceski, who was known to police, died while being treated by paramedics on board a helicopter flying him to hospital.
Detective Superintendant Starling said his father was too distressed to give police a statement yet.
“The family is devastated over the incident,” Detective Superintendant Starling said.
“It’s remarkable that the father went out and confronted a bloke with a firearm to try and save his son.”
Police have established Strike Force Eve to investigate the incident and are yet to identify any suspects.
NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson says cash rewards and more police are needed to end gun violence after two shootings in the state last night.
“It only takes a knock on the wrong a door and a gunshot to be fired before someone is killed,” Mr Robertson said today.
He said payments of $50,000 for information that leads to arrests and convictions would help police break the “wall of silence” that surrounds gun crimes in Sydney.
Mr Robertson said NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell had buried his head in the sand and that there were no excuses for Sydney being 242 officers below the authorised strength.
“Barry O’Farrell sits on the north shore of Sydney and does nothing while the west and the southwest is being shot up like it’s a scene out of the wild west.”
Also on Saturday, several bullets were fired at a townhouse in Chiswick Road, Greenacre, about 7.45pm.
A woman inside the western Sydney property was cut as she fell to the floor as the gunfire rang out.
There have been 12 shootings in Sydney in the past fortnight and more than 40 since the start of the year.
But Mr O’Farrell said police are doing all they can to stop the shootings.
“We’re seeing enormous efforts by NSW police,” he told Sky News today.
“I’m frustrated by the number of gun crimes in Sydney and now overnight in the Illawarra.
“But let’s not undermine police who are doing a good job in tackling this.”
