A motorcyclist who fell off his scooter in the snow says he has been left traumatised after a council gritter drove around him leaving him injured in the road.

Father-of-three, George Howie, 32, was on his way home from work when his 100cc scooter skidded, throwing him off his bike.

But as he lay on the carriageway, the driver of a gritting lorry carefully drove around him before going on his way.

Traumatised: George Howie has accused a gritter of driving around him as he lay injured in the road after crashing his scooter

Traumatised: George Howie has accused a gritting team of driving around him as he lay injured in the road after crashing his scooter

Mr Howie, of Featherstone, West Yorkshire, said: ‘As I lay in the road I suddenly
became aware of bright orange lights. I looked up, just in time to see a
gritter driver carefully manoeuvre his vehicle around myself and my
bike then drive on.

‘I was shocked to see he was not
using his plough or distributing grit but I was even more shocked to
realise that he had clearly seen me and yet didn’t show the concern to
stop and ask if I was okay.

‘I suppose I should be grateful he made the effort to drive round me rather than drive over me.’

Mr Howie injured his knee in the accident which happened in Doncaster Road, Wakefield.

An elderly man had to pull his car over and help Mr Howie, before dragging his damaged scooter to the side of the road.

Mr Howie said: ‘I am disgusted at the way a council employee could drive past another human being laid in the middle of the road and not even make an effort to do so much as wind down the window to ask if I was alright.

‘The council has caused myself and my family what can be described as nothing less than complete trauma.’

Graham West, Wakefield Council’s highways manager, said: ‘We are sorry to hear of this incident and we are looking into whether any of our gritting vehicles were in the vicinity at the time.

‘We are trying to speak to the rider about what happened so we can get a clear picture and investigate further.’

Britain endured its coldest night of the winter last night with temperatures plummeting close to -18C in some areas.

Experts said the mercury had fallen to -17.8C in Chesham, Bucks, during the early hours of the morning and was expected to plunge even lower as the icy weather continues to grip the UK.

A ‘yellow’ severe weather warning instructing people to ‘be aware’ of ice on roads has been issued by the national weather service across the whole of England and parts of Wales.

A level three cold weather alert is also in place.

I suspect it was against the Councils Health and Safety Rules for him to get out of his truck and help the poor guy then…….

Pretty funny, motorcyclists deserve all they get.

Sorry to hear about this gentleman who had the accident, I wish him a speedy recovery, but he should have had more sense than to ride a motorcycle in those icy and slippery conditions. I respectfully suggest the gentleman should consider buying himself something like a Smart car as four wheels (with some protection around you) are safer than two in that sort of weather. (expecting a few red arrows for an honest, common sense comment!)

“What has being ‘a council employee’ got to do with it?! Would you not have been as shocked if it has been a retail assistant?”
It incites DM readers to hate the public sector more and also Council is an easy target to claim a bit of compo for his trauma.
It was however bad of the driver but I should think there are plenty of none council workers who would have done the same. Personally I would have stopped and helped.

Don’t be surprised – the driver wouldn’t want to get involved in case you sued him for exacerbating your injuries and/or the damage to your bike.

If somebody is stupid enough to ride a scooter in this weather then they deserve to be left where they fall.

………Mr Howle said, through gritted teeth 🙂

Buy some stabilizers.

‘The council has caused myself and my family what can be described as nothing less than complete trauma.’
you need to grow a pair son oh and whilst your at it buy a proper bike not a ‘chicken chaser’.

Is this an example of the British uncaring attitude or the British obsession with Health and Safety at work?
