Father on assault charges faces court

A man who allegedly assaulted his partner with a machete before going on the run with their 15-month-old son has made a brief appearance in a Perth court.

Jake Steven McNally, 25, appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday, charged with aggravated common assault, aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm and being armed in a way that may cause fear.

McNally is accused of assaulting his partner and her brother last week and then running away with his two-month-old baby and toddler.

The baby was returned shortly after, but McNally kept his 15-month-old son until Wednesday evening.

No charges have been laid against McNally for taking his children.

McNally was not required to enter a plea and did not apply for bail.

He is to reappear in court on January 12.
