Father, kids rescued in Moruya kayak drama

A Wollongong father and his two children narrowly avoided tragedy yesterday after being knocked off their kayaks in rough surf at Moruya Heads.

At the height of their dramatic rescue, one child, a 10-year-old boy, could not be found for an agonising 30 minutes.

The family had been paddling three kayaks near the mouth of the Moruya River just before 2.30pm yesterday when their afternoon adventure took a frightening turn.

Far South Coast Surf Life Saving spokesman Andrew Edmunds said the 10-year-old boy was suddenly hit by a wave in choppy conditions, throwing him into the water.

He said the boy and his eight-year-old sister began to panic.

Within moments the girl was also in the water after her kayak was hit by a wave, Mr Edmunds said.

It was unclear how the 40-year-old ended up in the water but he may also have been struck by a wave. The trio were then dragged 400m out to sea.

Witnesses at nearby Shelly Beach called for help and police, paramedics and surf lifesavers rushed to the scene.

The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter, based at nearby Moruya Airport, arrived on the scene in four minutes, the service’s executive officer Stephen Leahy said.

The chopper’s crew located the kayaks and saw the father and young girl clinging to one of the vessels. A rescue crew officer was winched into the water and swam over to the kayak.

The girl was found to be extremely distressed, hypothermic and tired.

“She almost didn’t make it,” Mr Edmunds said.

The girl was winched to safety and flown to a nearby beach.

Moments later, the father was rescued by volunteer lifesavers in an inflatable rescue boat.

However, Mr Edmunds said the 10-year-old boy remained missing for 30 minutes as the chopper and surf lifesavers frantically searched for signs of the child.

He was found on a nearby beach on the northern side of the river. He was treated for shock and hypothermia.

Mr Leahy said all three had been wearing life jackets at the time of their dramatic rescue.

“That’s what saved them.”

All three are believed to have escaped injury.
