A man who climbed Sydney Harbour Bridge and unfurled a banner saying “Pls help my kids” has been fined more than $3800 by a Sydney court.
Michael Fox, a former soldier, held up peak hour traffic on the bridge for more than two hours on May 13 last year after he climbed it to highlight his child custody issues.
In Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday, Magistrate Darryl Pearce found Fox guilty of climbing the bridge and wilfully preventing the free passage of persons or vehicles.
But he dismissed a charge of risking the safety of others.
In fining Fox a total of $3821, Mr Pearce noted he didn’t choose just any bridge to climb, but the “most iconic bridge” in Sydney.
The father of three, from Narrabeen on Sydney’s northern beaches, used ropes to climb to the top of the bridge just before dawn, before unfurling a banner saying “Pls help my kids”.
He rappelled down about 7am and was immediately arrested by police.
The stunt halted peak hour traffic on the bridge for more than two hours.
The court previously heard Fox had separated from his wife and was concerned about gaining access to his children.
