A devastated family discovered they had been grieving at an empty grave after a headstone was placed at the wrong cemetery plot.

For seven years the relatives of Denis Brown mourned him at a spot where they believed his cremated remains had been buried.

However they were shocked to learn that, since 2004, they had been grieving at an empty grave – while his remains were interred elsewhere at the cemetery.

Relatives only became aware of the error when they visited the plot recently to discover the headstone, flowers and ornaments were gone.

Staff at the London Road Cemetery, in Mitcham, south west London, then told the family the headstone had been moved to the plot where Mr Brown’s remains had been interred seven years earlier.

The mistake was thought to have occurred after a stonemason inscribed the memorial with the wrong grave number.

Hayley Arthur, the granddaughter of Mr Brown, said the family was still mourning the recent death of her mother when they discovered the error.

She said: ‘We’ve had so much this year – we don’t need this as well. It’s just been one thing after another.’

Mr Brown’s family have visited the grave over the last seven years, placing flowers and ornaments at the headstone – and even holding a blessing ceremony at the plot.

However, in November they discovered the headstone and all other items had been moved.

They were told by Merton Council – which owns the cemetery – that a stonemason hired by the family put the headstone at the wrong plot in 2004.

Staff only realised the error when the plot was assigned for another burial and noticed Mr Brown’s headstone had been inscribed with an incorrect grave number.

Merton councillor Andrew Judge, said while the incident had been upsetting for the family, council officers had ‘acted
diligently and swiftly when others’ errors were realised’.

A stonemason from the Mitcham branch of WA Truelove – which
had carried out the original work – is said to have told the family he had contacted Mr
Brown’s widow at the end of November to tell her that the
stone would need to be moved.

However, Mr Brown’s family this would have been impossible as by this point Mrs
Brown had already moved to the Isle of Wight to be closer to her
relatives.

An employee at WA Truelove’s Mitcham branch declined to discuss the incident and said the situation was ‘nothing to do with us’.
